Traveling With a Micro Crawler: How to Pack, Fly, and Store It
How to pack an SCX24 or TRX4M for a trip, what the airline rules actually say about your LiPo batteries, and how to store the rig between runs.
The best thing about a micro crawler is that it goes places with you. That is not marketing. A whole SCX24 fits in a backpack pocket with room left over for a charger, and I have run mine in a hotel courtyard, a campground gravel pile, and my in-laws’ back garden without ever thinking of it as “bringing the hobby along.” It just comes.
What nobody explains is the small pile of details that make the difference between a rig that arrives ready to drive and one that arrives with a cracked body, a puffed battery, and a shock cap somewhere in the bottom of the bag. None of it is complicated. Most of it is stuff I learned by getting it wrong first.
What Actually Needs Protecting
The chassis is tougher than you think. Micro crawlers are mostly plastic and small metal parts, and the whole thing weighs about as much as a paperback. Dropping it into a bag is not going to snap the frame.
Three things do need attention:
The body. This is the fragile part. Polycarbonate cracks along stress lines, and a body that has already taken rock hits on the trail has stress lines you cannot see. Anything with weight stacked on it will find them.
The shocks and steering links. Not because they are weak, but because packing the truck on its side with a jacket pressed against it puts steady load on parts designed for brief impacts. Bent links are annoying to diagnose later because the truck just pulls to one side and you assume it is trim.
The batteries. Not a fragility problem. A safety and longevity problem, covered below.
Everything else on the truck can take being packed.
Picking a Case (Or Not)
You do not need a hard case. I want to say that clearly, because the search results will try to sell you one.
For a car trip, a backpack with the truck wrapped in a shop towel is fine. I did that for a year. A cheap plastic bin with a lid works even better if you have trunk space, because it also keeps the dirt contained.
A padded case with pluck foam starts earning its price in three situations: the rig is going in checked luggage, it is riding loose in a truck bed, or other gear is going to get stacked on top of it. Foam that you tear to the shape of your chassis holds the truck at its frame rails instead of on its suspension, which is the actual benefit. The waterproofing and the crush rating are mostly beside the point for something this small.
If you have an SCX10 rather than a micro, the math changes. It is a 1/10 scale truck, and it is not fitting in a backpack next to your laptop. A hard case or a dedicated tote is closer to mandatory, and the SCX10 platform guide gets into what stepping up in size actually costs you in convenience.
The Battery Rules, Including Flying
This is the part people get wrong, and it is the only part with real stakes.
Storage charge, not full charge. A LiPo pack sitting at full charge for a week in a hot car is how you get a puffed battery. Before a trip, put your packs in storage mode on the charger, which lands them around 3.8V per cell. If your charger does not have a storage mode, run the pack down to roughly half and leave it there. Terminals covered. Cap the connectors or tape over them. A loose pack in a bag full of hex drivers is a short waiting to happen.
LiPo-safe bags. Cheap, light, and the only thing on this list I would call non-optional for travel. Get a small LiPo-safe bag and put every pack in one.
Flying with them. As of now, under US rules, spare lithium batteries have to go in your carry-on bag, not checked luggage, with terminals protected. There is a 100 watt-hour threshold above which you need airline approval, and micro crawler packs are not close to it. Multiply pack voltage by capacity in amp-hours to get watt-hours: a 2S 1300mAh pack is 7.4V times 1.3Ah, which is about 9.6 watt-hours. You could carry a dozen and still be under.
The truck itself can go in either bag. I put mine in the carry-on because I do not enjoy imagining what checked baggage handling does to a body shell, but that is preference, not rules. Airline policies change and vary between carriers, so check your specific airline before you go rather than trusting a guide from months ago, including this one.
What to Pack Beyond the Truck
The temptation is to bring the whole bench. Do not. The failure mode on a trip is not “I did not have the right tool,” it is “I brought a tackle box of parts and never opened it.”
What actually earns space:
- Hex drivers in the sizes your truck uses, usually 1.5mm and 2mm on micros
- A few spare body clips, because they vanish
- One spare driveshaft if your platform is known for popping them
- Your charger and its power cable, which is the thing people forget
- A small brush for dust
That is it. A trip is not the time for a project. If something breaks badly enough that you cannot fix it with the above, it goes home in the bag and gets fixed on the bench. Storing It Between Runs
Short-term storage is simple: get the dirt off before it goes on the shelf. Dust is abrasive, and it migrates into bearings and gear mesh while the truck sits. For longer breaks, a few months over winter or whatever your version of an off-season is:
- Batteries out of the truck, at storage voltage, in their bags, somewhere cool
- Body off or at least not weighted
- Truck stored on its wheels, not hanging or on its side
- Somewhere that does not swing between freezing and hot, so not an uninsulated garage if you can help it
The batteries are the only part that genuinely degrades sitting still. The truck will be exactly as you left it.
What to Buy
Honest ranking, cheapest and most useful first:
- LiPo-safe bags - a few dollars, and the only real safety item here. Buy these first.
- A small parts organizer - keeps clips, spare screws, and a driveshaft from migrating around the bag.
- A padded case with pluck foam - worth it if the truck flies, rides in a truck bed, or gets stacked on. Otherwise skip it and use a backpack.
You do not need a dedicated travel charger. The one you already own is almost certainly fine, and buying a second charger to leave in a bag is the kind of purchase that feels productive and is not.
